Clinical Genomics - Prenatal Testing

CLINICAL INDICATION

  • Isolated risk for aneuploidy
    • Positive maternal serum testing
    • Soft markers
    • Advanced Maternal Age
  • Abnormal ultrasound
  • Family History
  • Intrauterine Fetal Death (Amniotic Fluid only)
    • For fetal tissue/ products of conception, see POC testing

TESTING

*Microarray testing requires consultation with the Maritime Medical Genetic Service. The Maritime Medical Genetics Service can be reached by phone at 902-470-8754.

LABORATORY REQUISITION REQUIRED

For fetal sample:

For maternal sample (required for all prenatal samples):

SAMPLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Amnotic Fluid: 30ml of fluid in sterile tubes

  • CVS: 25-30mg of CVS in sterile media

    • Please give Genomics Laboratory advanced notice if possible

  • Cordocentesis: 1-5 ml blood in EDTA (purple top) tube, 1-5 ml blood in sodium heparin (green top) tube for karyotyping

  • Maternal Samples: 3-5 ml peripheral blood in EDTA (purple top) tube

All specimens must be sent with a completed requisition. Specimen and requisition must both be labelled with the following matching identifiers:

  • Patient's full name (first and last)
    AND

  • Patient’s Health Card Number or Hospital Identification Number

Any specimens received without the appropriate requisition or identifiers may be rejected.

TURNAROUND TIME

RAD: 5 Days

Other molecular testing: 7 days

Microarray: 14 days

Cytogenetic Testing: 14 days

For pregnancies that are no longer ongoing:

RAD: 14 days

Other molecular testing: 6 weeks

Microarray: 6 weeks

Cytogenetics (Follow-up to abnormal only): 4 weeks
