Clinical Genomics

The Clinical Genomics Division provides full-service integrated molecular and cytogenetic testing for the Maritime Provinces and acts as a referral site for institutions outside the region. In collaboration with the Maritime Medical Genetics Service and other clinical partners, the Clinical Genomics Division ensures timely and clinically-actionable results required for appropriate patient care.

The Clinical Genomics lab provides comprehensive genetic testing for many pediatric and adult Mendelian disorders, as well as chromosome studies for constitutional, prenatal and oncology samples. Our team of professionals consists of board certified (ABMG/CCMG) Clinical Laboratory Scientists, Genetic Counsellors, Medical Laboratory Technologists, and Technicians.

Prenatal testing includes Rapid Aneuploidy Detection (RAD) and microarray analysis for high-risk pregnancies. Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is also coordinated for specific clinical indications. As part of the Maritime Newborn Screening (NBS) program, the Clinical Genomics Lab provides testing for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) disorders.

Our specialized services also include microarray analysis for developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, and congenital anomalies as well as Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and Spectral Karyotyping (SKY) testing for further investigation of complex karyotype analysis. Through excellence in discovery and innovation, the Clinical Genomics Division has recently acquired Next-Generation Sequencing technology with clinical testing services to become available in late 2016. As well, the Clinical Genomics Division is the only site in the Maritimes accredited by the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) to perform chromosome analysis on pediatric leukemia samples.

In conjunction with providing timely quality care, the division also believes in fostering positive relationships in education and research. The Clinical Genomics service has built partnerships with many research groups and provides teaching opportunities for Dalhousie University medical school students, residents and fellows, as well as clinical placements for students from the Michener Genetic Technology program.
