IWK recognizes World Prematurity Day on November 17th

For Immediate Release: HALIFAX, NS - Every year in Nova Scotia, over one hundred babies are born before their due date.  Some of the most premature babies are born nearly 17 weeks early and can weigh less than one pound.  For these premature babies, the journey from the hospital to home can be long and full of complexities.

Friday, November 17th is World Prematurity Day, a day to raise awareness for the challenges premature babies and their families face.

November 13 to 19 is World Antibiotic Awareness Week – what you should know.

For Immediate Release – Halifax: Infectious diseases are becoming harder to treat and contain because a growing number of bacteria have developed resistance to antibiotics. Healthcare providers in Canada increasingly see treatment failures, where antibiotics no longer work for some common infections, like pneumonia. With approximately one third of IWK Health Centre patients receiving antimicrobials on any given day this poses a significant challenge for IWK staff.

Sepsis PedsPacs introduced in the IWK Emergency Department

For Immediate Release – Halifax: Sepsis, a potentially life-threatening complication of infec-tion, is a leading cause of death in infants and children with a reported 6 million deaths world-wide from it each year. This week the IWK Health Centre Emergency Department is introducing TREKK Sepsis PedsPac, a standardized screening tool that can help identify if children are suf-fering from pediatric sepsis. It is one of nine sites to do so across Canada.
