While we make every effort to meet the needs of the media, there are legal and ethical restrictions on the extent and type of information that may be released. The IWK respects and upholds the confidentiality, rights and needs of our patients and their families, staff and volunteers.
When a journalist requests to photograph, film or interview a patient, the Health Centre must first obtain the patient’s permission and signed consent before the request can be facilitated.
There are instances when the IWK cannot comment publicly on sensitive matters that could compromise the reputation and/or privacy of patients or staff.
Information about a patient’s condition will not be released without the verbal or written consent of the patient, parent/guardian or immediate family member.
Members of the news media must obtain authorization from Communications and Public Affairs before coming on site. Communications and Public Affairs or Protection Services staff must accompany the media during their visit to the IWK. If possible, interviews should be coordinated in public areas or conference rooms, rather than on a unit in the patient’s room.
We make every effort to respond quickly to media requests. Call Communications and Public Affairs during regular office hours at 902-470-7086. For media requests after hours and on weekends, please call 902-470-8888. Switchboard will page the Communications and Public Affairs advisor on call.
