Each year, approximately 200 critically ill or injured women, children and newborns require air transport to the IWK Health Centre. A rooftop helideck at the IWK allows the provincial air medical transport helicopter to land directly at the Health Centre, reducing the time and number of transfers required to get patients to the Health Centre. More than 96 per cent of these patients are admitted directly to an intensive care area or operating room.
As the only accredited pediatric trauma care centre in the Maritimes, and the only health centre providing neonatal, pediatric and obstetric tertiary-level care to the Maritime community, the IWK helideck enables us to receive these patients as quickly as possible to provide them with the expert, critical care they need.
