Autism is a complex brain disorder. It usually appears in the toddler years. It may be diagnosed later in some children. It affects the normal development of social and communication skills. The common features of autism include:
- Difficulty with social interactions;
- Difficulty with both verbal and non-verbal communication; and
- Limited and repetitive patterns of play and other behavior.
Any of these developmental differences may vary from mild to severe. The term autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) captures this range.
Pervasive Developmental Disorder is another term that may be used to refer to autism and related disorders. Asperger syndrome is a form of autism accompanied by relatively well-developed language skills.
