On a Journey to our New Vision: January 15th, 2007
~A message from Anne McGuire, President and CEO
We are fortunate to be celebrating an important milestone at the IWK Health Centre– the launch of our new Strategic Plan. A Strategic Plan is just that – it’s a plan, an intention, a roadmap. On January 11th, 2007, we officially launched the IWK’s roadmap on our journey toward our new Vision of “Healthy Families. The Best Care.”
This plan comes from listening and talking to at least 700 IWK staff, physicians, volunteers, patients, families and community partners over the past many months. In addition, it comes from an understanding of many urgent and complex problems facing the Canadian health care system – and our role in that system. This Strategic Plan also comes from our knowledge that too much harm is done in the process of care. It is informed by our understanding that we will soon be unable to address all of the needs that our population will have for health care, leading to the necessity to prevent or better manage illness. It is also informed by the evidence that we still have much to learn about how to be more efficient and more effective, for more people at the same time. And all of this will be supported by new knowledge. Therefore, the IWK must continue to grow our research potential to help find the answers to these and many other challenges.
At the heart of this plan are five new Key Directions. Much work has gone into the development of each of these Key Directions to ensure they are just right in scope and intent. If the Strategic Plan is the IWK’s road map, then these Key Directions are the landmarks we’re working to reach along our journey.
Our 5 Key Directions are as follows:
The IWK Health Centre recognizes that our external partners and key stakeholders have an important role to play in the success of our new Strategic Plan. I invite you to take the time to review our Plan, our Key Directions, goals and measures. Please follow the links at the top of this page to read the full Strategic Plan, which will provide you with greater detail on these Key Directions.
Though the launch of the Health Centre’s new Strategic Plan marks a critical place on our path, it is really the signal of much work ahead.
Members of the IWK’s Executive Leadership Team will drive the implementation of the Strategic Plan. But, they will not be able to do this alone – they will be supported by strong, interdisciplinary and interwoven teams made up of representatives from within and outside our walls.
It will be the ELT’s earliest priority to establish the Health Centre around a new way of working – and learning new tools that will enable us to make these Key Directions come true. Over the next few months, the IWK will formalize the implementation structure for the Plan with opportunity for members of the Health Centre and beyond to participate in turning our plan into action.
The navigation at left will connect you to a video describing the Key Directions that are at the core of the Plan. Also, as mentioned, please follow the links above to a PDF version of the Strategic Plan and Major Goals document, as well as a document called “Measuring Up” that will be used to track our progress.
I look forward to working with our external partners and other key stakeholders as we make this plan a reality.
Thank you.
