The IWK Health Centre was chosen as one of three model sites throughout Nova Scotia to integrate midwives in our primary maternity care team. The Midwifery Act passed on March 18, 2009, and the IWK hired four midwives.
As part of the IWK midwifery service, homebirths will be an option available to local women and their families. The IWK homebirth policy will be approved in the coming months. While we appreciate that this causes a delay for some women to have their homebirths, it is important to ensure that the proper policies and procedures are in place for the safety and well-being of women and their families.
Midwives are local health care providers available to provide care to healthy women during pregnancy, labour, birth and in the early weeks with their newborns. They play a key role in the multi-disciplinary team approach to maternity care. They work with obstetricians, family physicians, nurses and other care providers to enhance the maternity care provided at the IWK Health Centre.
