A Message from Karen Hutt, Chair, IWK Board of Directors

This week, the Board of Directors of the IWK received the findings of an independent review undertaken by Grant Thornton of IWK’s CEO Expenses.

Specifically, the Board sought to review key controls and processes related to CEO expenses at the IWK; a review of CEO expenses for appropriateness and consistency with relevant IWK policies; and, a review of compliance with the reporting requirements of the Province of Nova Scotia’s Administrative Directive.

In fulfilling our Board’s commitment to accountability and transparency, we are now sharing the results of the review and its recommendations with IWK staff, physicians, and the broader public. This link will take you to the document, which is now available on the IWK website.

The Board has endorsed all of the findings, has approved the 14 recommendations and has mandated the Board’s Finance, Audit and Risk Committee to oversee the implementation of all of the recommendations and for Management to provide weekly status update to the Board until this work is complete. We will also be fulfilling our commitment to accountability and transparency by providing updates to members of the IWK community and key stakeholders.

We have learned a great deal from this process and we have taken steps to make sure that something like this can never happen again.

We take very seriously the trust placed in us as we oversee this organization and we are grateful for the continued support as we proceed to do our best for those we serve. Please know that the Board of Directors highly values the world class care, research and teaching that IWK staff and physicians provide each day.
